Emergency shelter that students will build

Course Info:

  • When: May 24-25 and October 4-5, 2025

  • Where: Campton, New Hampshire

  • Duration: 2 days

  • Age Requirement: Minimum age is 16 and need to be accompanied by an adult.

  • Cost: $275.00 per adult, $95.00 per child (includes all materials to construct an emergency shelter that students get to keep and camping fees)

  • Water procurement and treatment

  • Fire methodology

  • Knife safety and use

  • Introduction to foraging

  • Principals of thermoregulation

  • Gear selection/ recommendations

  • Rescue plans and signaling techniques

  • Open fire cooking techniques

  • Knots and natural cordage

Gear List :

***This class will be conducted in the outdoors, please dress appropriately for the season.***

***Below are some specific item recommendations that we have tested and used on many trips. If you have a piece of equipment you would like to use, please feel free to bring what works for you.***

  • Raingear (Top and Bottom)

  • Non-insulated metal water bottle or a small metal pot to boil water in-Here’s an option for people starting out.

  • Cup for hot/cold drinks

  • Sharp knife, fixed blade (non-folding) – We recommend Morakniv knives. They are durable and cheap!!!!!!!

  • Headlamp and Extra Batteries

  • Blanket/ Sleeping Bag (Keep in mind that you will be sleeping near an open fire). Wool blankets work great.

  • Day pack and equipment that you might typically carry

  • Food

Travel Information: Main training area is located in Campton, New Hampshire right off I-89. Local driving directions will be sent after registration.

Arrival and Departure: Day 1 will start at 9:00 am and run until 12:00 pm on Day 2.

Accommodations: Students will stay overnight in the shelters that they build.

Meals: Due to insurance restrictions, meals will not be provided. In order to remain on schedule, please plan on bringing your meals with you. There is an outdoor cooking area that students can use to cook meals over an open fire.

Registration Policy: Your spot in a class is not secured until we receive the registration AND full payment. If a class is already full, we will issue a 100% refund or credit for a future class.

Cancellation and Refund Policies: With cancellations more than 30 days in advance of the class, the cost, less any credit card processing fee’s, will be refunded. With cancellations less than 30 days prior to the start of the class all monies are non-refundable and non-transferable. These policies reflect the fact that we do not overbook, and cancelled spaces are very difficult to fill at the last minute. If we have to cancel a class, we will issues a 100% refund or credit for a future class.

Liability Release Policy: Before the start of each class, all participants are required to have a signed Liability Release form and Photo Release form. All forms will be provided on-site of Day 1.

Gear Loaning Policy: We have very little equipment that can be lent out. Please read the Gear List to ensure you have the right stuff.

Training Area Info: The training area is located on 40 plus acres of private land. The outdoor classroom is a short walk from the parking area and may be difficult for certain individuals. There are no structures, running water, or electricity. If you plan on using any electronics, think about bringing a portable battery charger. Hand washing stations, potable water, and overhead cover will be provided. There is an outdoor cooking area that students can use to cook meals over an open fire. Keep in mind that we don’t have an alternative to the composting system. If using a composting toilet makes you significantly uncomfortable, then this class probably is not a good option for you.

Parking Info: There is a designated parking area at the training site. Details will be sent along with directions after you register.
